Headline ROI is the wrong number

Most return figures quoted for websites are gross of everything that makes the return risky. 'I bought it at a 3x and it earns 33% a year' counts the cash flow and silently assumes the cash flow is safe, the platform stable, the work zero, and the income spread. Strip those assumptions and the real, risk-adjusted return is smaller — sometimes much smaller.

This is not pessimism; it is just accounting for the things a careful buyer prices anyway. A conservative valuation does the same work up front: it discounts for the risks instead of waiting for one of them to arrive and do the discounting for you. The temptation is to collapse all this into a single 'risk-adjusted value.' Resist it. Risk does not just lower the expected value — it raises the uncertainty around it.
